ILLINOIS, USA: Don’t Dread the Routine

January 12, 2012 10 comments

Vacation ends.

Call it the weekend-phenomenon.  Good things seem to wrap up just as they are getting started. It’s the truth, and it hurts, but it wouldn’t be vacation if it went on forever.

Boo.

A friend writes on Facebook:

Every morning during our break, our little boy has woken us up with a long snuggle and a game of “Cars Memory” (or two, or three) in bed. I am desperately going to miss this morning ritual when we go back to our working reality tomorrow. I have decided I want to be a millionaire so that we can all just stay home like this together forever. Any ideas? Read more…

JAPAN: In Review

November 30, 2011 5 comments

It’s that time of year again. New Year’s is the biggest holiday on the Japanese calendar, and as it approaches Japanese TV is full of “talent” (celebrities with no actual, recognizable talent) reflecting on the year that has passed.

And it’s been an awful one for everyone in eastern Honshu.

So I thought I’d take a moment to reflect on the things I am thankful for thus far in 2011:

-I’m thankful we didn’t die in the earthquake on March 11. For two or three minutes there, I wasn’t so sure.

-I’m thankful my son was home with the flu that day. So many children ended up spending the night at school and daycare because their parents were unable to come home from work. Not to mention the parents who never came, or the children who never made it home from school. Read more…

CANADA: Get Out There and Shop!!

November 21, 2011 27 comments

Whether we like it, or not, the holidays are only a few weeks away and that means shopping.

And lots of it.

I adore shopping, however, I am usually browsing the stores with children, sweating profusely, and football holding while I pull my hair out.

So to save you all the same anxiety attacks I have some key tips that will save you during this busy time of year.

1. Before leaving pack a bag with various snacks, drinks, diapers, changes of clothes, books, crayons, the kitchen sink and anything else that might keep your child(ren) for 10 minutes. Read more…

NEW YORK, USA: A Mother’s Job is Never Done!

November 15, 2011 26 comments

So here I am, on vacation with my family (down at the Jersey Shore for those of you familiar with the awful TV show with the same name), enjoying, or supposed to be enjoying, the beach.

We were lucky enough to be able to find an apartment for rent, which is right next to the beach.  This is so convenient, since we don’t have to worry about eating out every single meal while on vacation (which as you moms know, is not as healthy as preparing the food at home).  It’s also convenient for when the little ones are tired, and we can just call it a day and walk up to our apartment.

The problem is, I find that I am spending more time in this apartment than on the beach, usually  with one, if not both, of my children.  In fact the only “alone time” I have had since we arrived, is a two-block walk to buy some bread for lunch the other day.  Read more…

BRAZIL: Returning to São João do Tigre

October 10, 2011 6 comments

When I was a child I went on a car trip that I spent decades wanting to repeat. At the time, my family lived in a tiny inland town in northeastern Brazil, where its 3,000 or so residents live perched on a beautiful mountain 900 m above sea level.

An older cousin who lived with us was getting married at what was then considered to be the “ripe old age” of 25 and needed her baptism certificate for the traditional Catholic Church ceremony. This needed to be picked up from her native town several hours away. Read more…

AUSTRALIA: The Holiday from Hell

Have you ever had one of those holidays that you wish you had never taken? You know the sort of holiday I’m talking about, one of those holidays which nightmares are made of and that made you wish that you’d stayed at home.

One of our favourite pastimes when our children were younger was taking them on camping trips. Camping was fun and cheap which were definite requirements for our holidays with only one wage coming into the house. We took my youngest son on his first camping trip at the age of 9 weeks; some of my friends were horrified that I would even consider taking such a young baby camping with no running water or electricity. Believe me when I say that babies are much easier than toddlers to take camping.

As is sometimes the case, one or two of these camping trips have been memorable (or should I say forgettable or maybe even regrettable). Read more…
